Learning at Westview

At Westview Elementary, we believe that learning is about more than acquiring knowledge. It is about helping students develop the skills, confidence, and curiosity they need to navigate an ever-changing world.

Our teachers create learning experiences that are engaging, inclusive, and responsive to the needs of students. Through the British Columbia curriculum, students are encouraged to think critically, solve problems, communicate effectively, collaborate with others, and develop a lifelong love of learning.

Literacy

Strong literacy skills open doors to future learning and success.

At Westview, we focus on helping students become confident readers, writers, speakers, listeners, and thinkers. Students engage with a variety of texts and learning experiences designed to strengthen foundational skills while fostering a love of reading and storytelling.

Our staff work collaboratively to monitor student progress, respond to student needs, and provide targeted supports when required.

Numeracy

Numeracy is more than mathematics—it is the ability to think logically, solve problems, reason, and make sense of the world around us.

Students are encouraged to explore mathematical concepts through hands-on learning, discussion, inquiry, and real-world applications. We strive to develop confident mathematicians who are willing to take risks, explain their thinking, and persevere through challenges.

Indigenous Learning

As a school located on the traditional and treaty territory of the Tla’amin Nation, we are committed to ongoing learning and relationship-building.

Students engage with Indigenous perspectives, histories, cultures, and ways of knowing throughout the school year. We strive to ensure Indigenous learning is an authentic and meaningful part of the educational experience for all students.

Fine Arts

The arts provide opportunities for creativity, self-expression, and personal growth.

Students participate in visual arts, music, drama, and other creative experiences that help them develop confidence, collaboration skills, and an appreciation for diverse forms of expression.

Physical Education and Wellness

Healthy bodies support healthy minds.

Students participate in physical education, outdoor activities, and wellness initiatives that encourage active lifestyles, teamwork, resilience, and positive decision-making.

Leadership and Citizenship

Learning extends beyond the classroom.

Students have opportunities to develop leadership skills, contribute to the school community, and build positive relationships through student leadership opportunities, house teams, service projects, assemblies, and school-wide events.

Technology and Digital Citizenship

Technology can be a powerful tool for learning when used thoughtfully and responsibly.

Students learn how to use technology to create, communicate, collaborate, and solve problems while developing the digital citizenship skills needed to navigate an increasingly connected world.

A Community of Learners

At Westview, we believe that learning happens best when students feel safe, supported, and connected. By working together with families and the broader community, we strive to create learning experiences that challenge, inspire, and prepare students for future success.

Our goal is simple: every student learning, growing, and thriving.
