Student Supports
At Westview Elementary, we believe that every student deserves to feel successful, connected, and supported at school.
Students learn in different ways and bring a wide range of strengths, interests, experiences, and needs to the classroom. Our Student Support Services team works collaboratively with classroom teachers, families, and district specialists to help ensure that all students can access learning and participate meaningfully in school life.
Our goal is to provide support that is responsive, inclusive, and student-centred while maintaining strong connections to the classroom community whenever possible.
A Team Approach
Supporting students is a shared responsibility.
Classroom teachers are the primary support for all learners and work closely with school and district staff to identify strengths, monitor progress, and respond to student needs. Families are important partners in this process, and we value ongoing communication and collaboration.
Depending on a student’s needs, support may involve classroom-based strategies, small-group instruction, individual interventions, consultation with specialists, or formal support plans.
Learning Assistance
Learning Assistance supports students who may require additional help with academic skills, learning strategies, organization, or classroom success.
Support may be provided through:
- Classroom-based support
- Small-group instruction
- Individual intervention
- Collaboration with classroom teachers
- Goal setting and progress monitoring
Our goal is to help students develop the skills, confidence, and independence needed to succeed as learners.
Inclusive Education
Westview is committed to inclusive education practices that recognize and respond to the diverse needs of learners.
Some students may have Individual Education Plans (IEPs) or require adaptations to support their learning. School staff work together to develop appropriate goals, strategies, and supports while ensuring students remain connected to their peers and classroom community.
Social, Emotional, and Behavioural Supports
Student well-being is essential for learning.
We recognize that students may occasionally need support with self-regulation, friendships, emotional well-being, behaviour, or problem-solving skills. Staff work proactively to help students build positive relationships, resilience, self-awareness, and coping strategies.
When additional support is needed, school staff may collaborate with families and district specialists to develop plans that support student success.
English Language Learning (ELL)
Students who are learning English as an additional language may receive support through our English Language Learning program.
ELL services help students develop confidence and proficiency in English while participating fully in classroom learning and school life.
Indigenous Student Support
Westview works closely with Indigenous Education staff to support Indigenous learners and strengthen connections between school, family, culture, and community.
Support may include academic assistance, cultural learning opportunities, advocacy, and relationship-building with students and families.
School-Based Team
The School-Based Team (SBT) is a collaborative problem-solving team that helps coordinate support for students who may require additional assistance.
The team may include:
- School administrators
- Classroom teachers
- Learning Assistance teachers
- Student Support teachers
- Counsellors
- Parents and caregivers
- District specialists and community partners, when appropriate
The School-Based Team reviews student strengths and needs, develops support plans, and helps coordinate resources and services.
District and Community Supports
When appropriate, students and families may access additional support from district specialists and community agencies. These supports may include:
- School psychology services
- Speech and language services
- Occupational therapy
- Behaviour support services
- Mental health services
- Community-based supports
Referrals and access to services are coordinated through the school in partnership with families.
Working Together
The most successful support plans are built through strong partnerships between students, families, school staff, and community partners.
If you have questions about your child’s learning, development, or well-being, we encourage you to begin by speaking with your child’s classroom teacher. Together, we can determine the best way to support your child’s growth and success at Westview Elementary.
