Indigenous Education & Supports
Westview Elementary is located on the traditional and treaty territory of the Tla’amin Nation. We are grateful to learn, work, and play on these lands and recognize our shared responsibility to build respectful relationships and deepen our understanding of the histories, cultures, languages, and perspectives that shape our community.
At Westview, Indigenous Education is not a separate program—it is an important part of our commitment to belonging, learning, and reconciliation. We strive to create a school environment where Indigenous students see themselves reflected in their learning and where all students develop a greater understanding of Indigenous histories, cultures, and ways of knowing.
Supporting Indigenous Learners
Indigenous students and families have access to a variety of supports through the school and district Indigenous Education team.
These supports may include:
- Academic support and advocacy
- Goal setting and progress monitoring
- Family and school connections
- Cultural learning opportunities
- Transition support between grades and schools
- Collaboration with classroom teachers and support staff
- Access to district Indigenous Education programs and resources
Our goal is to ensure Indigenous students feel a strong sense of belonging, connection, and success throughout their educational journey.
Learning Through Relationships
We believe that meaningful learning begins with relationships.
Westview staff work closely with Indigenous Education staff, families, community members, and the Tla’amin Nation to strengthen understanding and create authentic learning opportunities for students. These partnerships help connect classroom learning to local history, culture, language, and community.
Indigenous Learning for All Students
Indigenous perspectives are woven throughout learning experiences at Westview.
Students engage with Indigenous stories, voices, histories, worldviews, and contemporary experiences across subject areas and grade levels. Learning opportunities may include:
- Local Indigenous history and culture
- Traditional and contemporary Indigenous stories
- Indigenous art, music, and literature
- Land-based learning experiences
- Learning about residential schools and reconciliation in age-appropriate ways
- Exploration of Indigenous ways of knowing and being
These experiences help students develop respect, understanding, empathy, and a deeper connection to the place they call home.
Language and Culture
Westview is proud to incorporate local Indigenous language and culture into school life whenever possible. Through partnerships and learning opportunities, students are introduced to local teachings, traditions, and the ʔayʔajuθəm language of the Tla’amin Nation.
We recognize that language, culture, and identity are deeply connected and play an important role in student well-being and success.
Truth and Reconciliation
Reconciliation is an ongoing commitment and a shared responsibility.
At Westview, we continue to learn about the impacts of colonization and residential schools while working toward a future built on respect, understanding, and meaningful relationships. We believe that education plays an important role in this journey and that every student has a role to play in creating a more inclusive and equitable society.
Connecting with Indigenous Education
Families who have questions about Indigenous Education services or supports are encouraged to contact the school. We are committed to working alongside students, families, and community partners to ensure Indigenous learners feel welcomed, valued, and supported at Westview Elementary.
