Auditory Outreach Equipment Loan Library List with Descriptions
Auditory Outreach, a Provincial Resource Program funded by the Ministry of Education and Childcare, in collaboration with provincial centres, local audiologists and other service providers, assists public and independent schools throughout the province address the needs of students with hearing difficulties. The Auditory Outreach provides a variety of services, which includes consultation with school staff and parents, assisting with assessments and with establishing individualized program goals. The Auditory Outreach also loans assistive listening devices for individual students identified as needing this technology for school use. The following is a general overview of remote microphone hearing assistive technologies (RMHAT) currently available through the Auditory Outreach loan library. Please note: descriptions are for general reference only; individual students’ hearing needs vary widely and choice of RM is largely dictated by compatibility with the personal hearing instrument. Please consult with your student’s audiologist for the best recommendation for your student’s individual needs.
Transmitters
Roger Touchscreen
The Touchscreen is a digital wireless microphone and transmitter that is designed to be worn on a lanyard or belt clip with boom mic. It features an accelerometer that automatically changes the microphone mode from directional when worn by teacher to omni-directional for small group work. It has a Network feature that enables team-teaching and is compatible with the Digimaster sound field and Pass Mic. With a screen and easily accessible buttons, it allows convenient monitoring of your student’s RM integrity and is the transmitter especially designed for, though not limited to, an elementary classroom.
Roger ON
The Roger On is a lightweight digital wireless microphone and transmitter that features multi-beam technology that allows it to detect and pick up speech and overcome noise and distance. Its pointing mode allows students to hear the teacher over distance and noise while having the microphone on their desk. It has an audio input jack that allows audio streaming from devices. As it is not compatible with the Digimaster sound field and does not have an easy interface for equipment monitoring, it is designed for the adult and teenaged user and within our program provisions, recommended for middle to high school students only.
Oticon EduMic
The EduMic is a lightweight microphone and transmitter that operates on Bluetooth. It streams directly to those Oticon hearing aids with Bluetooth e.g Opn Play, Xceed Play and Play Px. It can be worn using a lanyard or clipped to the lapel. It has an audio input jack that allows audio streaming from devices and an RM connector that is compatible with universal RM receivers for compatibility with other manufacturers’ classroom microphones.
Cochlear Mini Mic 2+
The MM2+ is a digital wireless microphone and transmitter that streams directly to most Cochlear processors e.g., Nucleus 8, Kanso 2 and Osia 2. It is lightweight and can be worn using a lanyard or clip. It has a built-in accelerometer that allows it to change microphone directionality and range depending on its position. It has an audio input jack that allows audio streaming from devices and an RM connector that is compatible with universal RM receivers for compatibility with other manufacturers’ classroom microphones.
Inspiro
The Inspiro is a digital wireless microphone and transmitter that has the advantage of being both lightweight and having a screen for easy control and monitoring. It uses the same 2.4 GHz frequency-hopping algorithm as the Touchscreen and shares its Network and sound field compatibility features to allow team-teaching and transmission to the Digimaster sound field. As this transmitter has been discontinued by the manufacturer, it is of limited availability in our loan library.
Receivers
Focus II
The Focus II is a digital ear-level RM receiver that is compatible with Phonak Roger transmitters e.g. Touchscreen, On, Inspiro. It has minimal amplification and is designed to be worn on the ear with normal to near-normal hearing for those with unilateral hearing loss or mild but educationally significant hearing loss.
Oticon Medical Streamer
Designed to be worn around the neck for individuals with compatible Oticon hearing aids, the Streamer acts as an intermediary device to enable direct audio streaming from Bluetooth devices, personal RM and loop systems. It has an audio input jack and a universal RM receiver input. It allows students with those Oticon hearing aids with no direct audio input, e.g. Ponto, to receive from other manufacturers’ RM transmitters. As this transmitter has been discontinued by the manufacturer, it is of limited availability in our loan library.
Roger Neckloop
A versatile induction loop receiver, the Neckloop allows students with T-coil compatible hearing aids or sound processors to receive wireless digital transmission from a Roger microphone. Its headphone input jack also allows students with minimal to mild hearing loss who are not able to wear hearing aids to access the teacher’s voice from a distance and over background noise by wearing headphones. It has a USB-C audio port that can be connected to a laptop or smart device for speech-to-text purposes. The Neckloop receiver is generally recommended either for those whose personal amplification devices are not compatible with direct audio input receivers or for those who can benefit from hearing aids but are not able to wear ear-level amplification or RM receivers.
Roger MyLink
The Roger MyLink is an inductive neckloop receiver that allows hearing instruments with telecoil to receive from a compatible RM transmitter e.g. Touchscreen, On, Inspiro. It needs to be worn around the neck and is usually recommended for those students whose hearing instruments do not have direct audio input. This receiver is of limited availability in our loan bank.
Roger X
Roger X is a universal remote microphone (RM) receiver that is compatible with any hearing instruments with direct audio input. When used together with a compatible transmitter, it provides students with wireless digital signal over distance and noise.
Roger 20
Roger 20 is an integrated RM receiver for the Cochlear Nucleus 7 and Nucleus 8 cochlear implant processor. It attaches directly onto the processor and when used with a compatible transmitter, provides wireless digital signal to the student over distance and noise.
Roger 21
Roger 21 is an integrated RM receiver for the Med-El Sonnet cochlear implant processor. It attaches directly onto the processor and when used with a compatible transmitter, provides wireless digital signal to the student over distance and noise.
