ABOUT

Welcome to James Thomson

We all know the saying "It takes a whole community to raise a child". Here at JT we believe it takes a whole Learning Community to educate a child. As a Learning Community our common goal is to work with you, our parents, to provide the best possible opportunity to increase academic and social responsibility skills to allow our students to meet the challenges of our complex world.

Things we know about parental involvement:

  • When parents are involved, students achieve more, regardless of socio-economic status, ethnic/racial background, or the parents education level.
  • The more extensive the parent involvement, the higher the student achievement.
  • The most accurate predictor of a student's achievement in school is the extent to which that student's family is able to:
  1. Create a home environment that encourages learning
  2. Communicate high, yet reasonable, expectations for their children's achievement and future careers
  3. Become involved in their children's education

We also know this to be true of teachers.

"Community begins with a shared vision. It is sustained by teachers who, as school leaders, bring inspiration and dedication to the institution. Who, after all, knows more about the classroom? Who is better able to inspire children? Who can evaluate, more sensitively, the educational progress of each student? And who, but teachers create a true community for learning? Teachers are, without question, the heartbeat of a successful school."

- Ernest Boyer

We all look forward to working together with you and your children to make our Learning Community the best it can be.

School Values Statement

We aim to educate socially responsible, literate and numerate students by providing evidence-based instruction. We uphold high standards through the First Peoples Principles of Learning, environmental respect, inclusion, rich cultural experiences, trilingual opportunities, and connection to nature.

May Day

Every year on May 17th, we celebrate our school's anniversary, known as May Day, with a full day of festivities. May Day 2024 was extra special as we honoured James Thomson's 100th year! Huge thank you to parent and volunteer, Neil Every, for beautifully capturing the event and the essence of our school.
