Trades Programs


Process for applying:  

1. Fill out application and submit to Tanya.Larkin@sd47.bc.ca
2. Submit electronic transcripts to VIU or NIC (not needed for welding)
3. Study for entry assessment, will be hosted at Brooks on Wed April 17th 1pm Brooks Library, and again May 8th. All applicants will be emailed a time to come in and write.
4. Submit Student Electronic Transcripts - see instructions just below!VIU Transcript Instructions5. Interview with instructor in June.
6. Program acceptance letter from Post Sec or instructor - late June early July.
7. Students who may need learning supports while in program must make an apt with Tracy Tunstall from VIU Centre for Accessible Learning in June.Tracy.Tunstall@viu.ca

Automotive Service Technician - Foundation Level 1

This full-time comprehensive program is designed to prepare students for a career in the Automotive Repair trade. The program is taught through daily lectures, seminars and demonstrations of current servicing techniques, (approximately 40% theory) as well as extensive practical training in a functioning, automotive shop setting (approximately 60% hands-on). Carpentry - Foundation Level 1

(Sustainable Building Practices)

This entry level trades training prepares students for apprenticeship in the building construction trade. Students learn the basics of carpentry. The program combines theory with lots of hands-on learning. It includes 4 weeks of work placement. Located at the Oceanview campus in Powell River. Culinary Arts - Apprenticeship Levels 1 & 2

This program is designed to train students for a career in professional cooking. Course content includes the preparation of meat, poultry, soup, salads, sauces, seafood, fruit and desserts. Students set up and operate a restaurant and cafeteria that provides regular lunches and caters many special events. Located at Birch Tree Cafe in Powell River.  For more information on the 2023-2024 PC1/2 program please check out the VIU website. Welding - Apprenticeship Level C

This 7 month welding program is delivered in a modular format with practical and related knowledge modules. As a level C ticket holder you could find work in a shipyard, fabrication shop, or with the Department of Highways. Located at the SD47 Welding site: 4495 Manson Ave. in Powell River. Hairdressing   (Career Prep Program)

Hairdressing is available for grade 10-12 students, they can sign up to take individual elective courses as outlined below. If students earn 70% or higher at the end Gr 12 they will receive a certificate of successful completion and career prep readiness for level 1 - foundation or apprenticeship options. 

Foundation Pathway - SD47 Hairdressing Program teaches students the skills for seamless entry and success into a PSI Hair Program or institution entry. 

Apprenticeship Pathway - SD47 students can be in the SD 47 Hair Program half days while earning YWT apprenticeship credits through working in industry for the second half of their day. Students can work for a total of 1000hrs and then challenge the ITA exam for their level 1 certification. Theory requirements will be met through classroom book work Gr 10-12. 

Grade 10 - half day program Sem 1 (two Gr 10 elective course - 8 credits total)

Grade 11 - half day program all year (four Gr 11 elective courses - 16 credits total)

Grade 12 - half or full day program options (four Gr 12 elective courses - 16 credits total, with Youth Work in Trades course (4 additional courses) options for acquiring apprenticeship hours and working in the salon).
