Work Experience Opportunities


Career Planning

A very important component of a career plan is connecting students to the 'world of work' through work experience. Work experience validates whether a student's interests and anticipated career pathway are the right fit for the student.

Work Experience 12A & 12B

Long-term work experience is open to Grade 10 through Grade 12 students who have an interest in pursuing any career field. In Work Experience 12A & 12B, a student spends 100 - 120 hours training at a worksite.  By doing this, skills are learned and questions are answered before career decisions are made.  Students either choose a work experience according to their current career interest or an area of passion.  Students work during the school day or after school and weekends .

How to Get Started and Next Steps

Please visit Brooks main office and book an appointment with Mrs. Larkin to get started.  

You may then engage in one or more work experiences that provide you with new skills and knowledge within that field of work. Once you have a career in mind you will need to make an appointment with a counsellor to make sure that you have the correct high school academic and elective courses for your potential career interests. As well, you will need to connect with your Career teacher and explore post secondary options for attaining your certifications required for the job.

Youth Work in Trades

  • There are four YWT courses: YWT11A, YWT 11B, YWT 12A, and YWT 12B.
  • A student can get these credits if they are working in industry on a job site that has a trades person with a red seal. Our Youth Work in Trades Coordinator will meet with the business manager / site super, and have them sign off that they will oversee the students work on site, and will verify hours for sign off with the Industry Training Authority (ITA – regulation branch for trades persons).
  • A YWIT student earns one course (4 credits) for every 120 hours worked in industry (4 courses worth of credits = 16 credits, if they work 420 hours).  
  • If a student gets the four courses, works 420 hours, and then continues on with the company and they work up to 900 hours  the year they turn 19, then the government will mail the student a $1000 cheque.
  • Essentially, you work 900 hours in the trade before  you turn 19, and you get $1000.
  • If a student is wanting to get their level 1 or 2 ticket in a trade (full red seal ticket takes 4 years) then they will need approx. 1400 hours in the trade each year / level. So it is advantageous to start early.
  • If a student takes our trades program then they are in a foundation program and the 1400 hours are included in the year of the SD47 trades program. If they work in industry and do the trades program through SD47 the hours worked in industry will roll over and count towards the students second year in that trade.      

Career-Life 12a Work Exploration

30 hours of work exploration are required for graduation and is intended to expose students to career-life possibilities. Students access the worksite under regulated hours and conditions, and are closely supervised by school district staff. To complete the required minimum 30-hour experience, a student may participate in one or more of the following opportunities:

  • service learning
  • volunteerism
  • employment
  • fieldwork

The goal of work experience is to become aware of and practice employability skills such as punctuality, communication, teamwork, positive work ethics and attitudes. Students may choose work experience to train for entry level employment or a placement related to future career goals.

Please find a 30 hour tracking form in the main office, these are to be submitted to Mrs. Larkin by late May each school year - 30 hours are required for grad.
