Official Press Release:
qathet School District Unveils New Logo Inspired by Community and Culture
The q̓at̓ᶿɛt (qathet) School District is proud to announce the unveiling of its new logo, a powerful visual identity rooted in the district’s mission, vision, and values. This marks the culmination of a significant journey that began last year with the official renaming of the district to ”qathet", a gifted ʔayʔajuθəm word meaning "working together."
The new logo, featuring an orca, symbolizes the spirit of collaboration and education that defines the qathet School District. Known as the "teacher of the sea," the orca reflects the district's commitment to nurturing, learning, and shared responsibility—values exemplified in both its schools and broader community.
The Coast-Salish inspired design was created in partnership with ɬaʔamɩn (Tla’amin) Nation artist Kobe Galligos and local graphic designer Rachelle Harvey. Working with district staff, their combined cultural insight and artistic vision led to the creation of a logo that not only reflects the district’s identity but also establishes a strong connection to the region’s beautiful territory and its people.
Galligos shared the inspiration behind his artwork, explaining, “The design of the eye on the smaller orca, while looking to the older orca for guidance, is also a message to the older generation. It's a reminder to lead by example. It’s not enough just to tell children to be good; we must actively show them, by example, in order for them to understand what it means to be a good person.”
Interim Superintendent Vianne Kintzinger emphasized the significance of the new logo, stating: “This thoughtful design embodies the spirit of working together, the inclusivity of our district, and our shared commitment to the growth and success of every student. It beautifully and playfully reflects the integration of our district’s values while conveying our responsibility to create a connected educational community”.
"A logo is more than just an image - it's a visual representation of who we are and what we stand for, which is why we wanted to undertake a thorough process of engagement, collaboration, and iteration,” said Director of Communications, Kristy Payne. “We are so excited to have such a meaningful symbol of our identity that will be used for years to come, with beautiful colours that reflect the land and community we serve."
The school district has commissioned Kobe Galligos to create a painting of the logo that will be hung at the school board office in the new year, once complete.
The community is invited to learn more about the journey behind the new logo by watching the video, What’s In a Logo?
