Flags at half-mast for the Honourable Murray Sinclair

Murray Sinclair

The qathet School District office building and schools will be flying the Canadian flag at half-mast to mark the loss of the Honourable Murray Sinclair, who passed away on Monday, November 4.

An esteemed Anishinaabe and member of the Peguis First Nation, Sinclair was a trailblazer for Indigenous justice and advocacy. He was the first Indigenous judge appointed in Manitoba and only the second in Canada. Throughout his career, Sinclair worked tirelessly to amplify Indigenous voices and fight for justice.

Among his many accomplishments, Sinclair received the Governor General’s Meritorious Service Cross and was appointed to the Senate for his outstanding public service. He is perhaps best known for his role as Chief Commissioner of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), where he guided the historic TRC report, including the 94 Calls to Action, which has shaped the ongoing path toward truth and reconciliation.

The TRC report highlighted the lasting impact of the residential school system on Indigenous Peoples and communities, giving voice to survivors and honouring the memory of children who never returned home. His work continues to inspire and guide us toward a more just and inclusive society.

Sinclair’s memorial takes place on Sunday, November 10th. The flags at all qSD schools and building will be lowered on Friday the 8th and remain at half-mast until Tuesday, November 12th.
