October 11th is National Coming Out Day 

This personal choice is not always safe or easy, and it is not a one-day event.  

Our schools play an important role in ensuring that students who choose to come out feel safe and have access to appropriate support.  

Moreover, this day provides an important opportunity for educators to raise awareness of the stereotypes and prejudices that continue to keep people “in the closet”, and the ways in which we all lose out when people are denied their human rights to authentic self-expression – whether it is their race, ethnicity, language, religion, culture, gender expression, sexual orientation or gender identity.
