School Counselling

The school counsellor is available to provide social, emotional, behavioural, and personal counselling supports.  The primary goal of school counselling is to help support students experience success in the school setting.  Students may access counselling services through a referral to the school-based team, or may self refer at the high school.  Prior to the provision of counselling supports, parents and students are reminded about confidentiality and the exceptions to confidentiality (consent, potential harm, child protection, legal requirements). For elementary students, a signed informed consent form is required for the school counsellor to see student on an ongoing basis.

When more intensive and therapeutic support is required by a child or youth, the counsellors help to facilitate referrals to outside counselling agencies and/or service providers.

Counsellors at the secondary level also provide educational and carrier advising supports. Brooks School Counselling Department
